WE ARE

What sets our project apart is our dedication towards capturing authenticity. From commuting over two hours to conduct field research within the spaces of participants, to volunteering at real immigration rights events, we gave this project our all. We are passionate about our community and we prioritized genuinity above all in our designs.

My Role

I used user research methods to design and conduct the participant interviews with the goal of encouraging open storytelling. I also designed the entire user flow from ideas, to wireframes, to the final interactive model.

Challenge

In today's political climate, we live in a time where fear-mongering, dehumanization, and political violence attempt to erase the immigrant narrative, or cause us shrink ourselves and our voice.

Exploration

Utilize storytelling and interactive website design to humanize the immigrant experience and fight back against the pressure to stay silent.

*We used meaningful photography and pseudonyms to reflect those who shared deeply but wished to remain anonymous.

To bring this project to life, we started with interviewing members of our community, gathering stories that speak to the depth, resilience, and complexity of the immigrant experience.

User Research

Detailed in-home interviews

Through interviewing real people, we also found ourselves reflecting and sharing with them. We found how empowering it feels to reflect with other people, share stories, and feel seen.

We found participants becoming more comfortable to tell their story when they are given the opportunity and encouragement to do so.

After this important field research, we made it our goal to utilize storytelling to humanize the immigrant experience and fight back against the pressure to stay silent.

Insights

Early Website Iterations

In order to create spaces for the stories we collected, we first created outdoor signage to gather awareness and attention. We then carefully crafted a website to act as a digital archive and hub for local resources. Lastly, we designed a full scale interactive exhibition to allow more people to share their stories, which we presented at our senior design showcase.

Design Process

User Flow

To work towards achieving our goal, I developed a multi-step user flow to help imagine how a user might interact with our storytelling campaign from end to end. This flow helped guide us to create a visually and intuitively cohesive collection of components.
